Protein Shakes

Hello lovelies, just a quickie to ask advice about protein shakes.  The wonderful vickyd suggested that I start testing out different protein shakes to see which ones I like.  A very smart suggestion.  Now sadly, I live in England which is surely infinitely less cool and advanced than America, so protein shakes aren't that readily available, and the ones that are seem to be more hardcore muscle builders huge vats of protein powder that scare me a bit.  So I can't really ask for specific recommendations, though I will be getting most of my shakes online, so there might be some American ones that ship to the UK.  Anyway, what I was wondering was...what do you consider to make a good shake in terms of nutritional information - how many calories would you usually have for what volume of shake, and the same for grams of protein??  Lots of the ones I've seen have 20g but some even have 40g for not too high a calorie count.  Also, does anyone drink protein shots rather than a long shake?  Big love x

  1. I read once that the body can only take it 25 gm of protein at a time, so the extra 15 gm in the 40 kind wouldn't be able to be processed by your liver or kidneys (or whatever) and might be turned into sugar. Just food for thought. :)

  2. I've heard the same as Ronnie that anything over 25 is a waste. Also, the most effective ones are the ones that come in huge vats. The other ones have more sugar to make them taste better (but it doesn't really work. Can you tell I hate protein shakes?). I have tried the shots and prefer them. I didn't do this post-op though because I needed the more liquid to feel fuller. The shots get you the protein but doesn't really make you feel full (at least not for me). In the spirit of full disclosure, I was not a good bandster and didn't get nearly enough protein every day after banding because I just couldn't stomach it. Good luck with your search!

  3. I've heard the same thing as Ronnie but if you look at the shakes that have 40g protein many times that is for 2 scoops of powder so if you just do 1 scoop then you'll be fine. I'm not sure what you have access to in the UK but many vitamin shops over here have money back guarantees so you can puchase it and if you don't like it you can return the unused portion.

I definately recommend a variety because drinking the same flavor day after day gets very old. I actually prefer vanilla protein powder because you can add things to it to change the flavor - I've mixed it with coffee, added chocolate strawberry milk powder, and purchased flavored sugar free syrups (like the ones they use in coffee houses) to switch things up.

Also keep in mind that everyone's tastes are different...if you ask 10 bandsters which ones they prefer you are likely to get 10 different answers! Good luck :)

  4. I HIGHLY recommend Unjury Protein shakes... I had my band put on September 8th and every shake I have had since has been like a tasty treat... The best is that you can order single serving trial packets from the company to see what you like (although with shipping you may not want to do that).... http://unjury.com/

I LOVE the classic chocolate (mixed with 8oz skim milk) and I also Kinda Love the strawberry (mixed with 8 oz water and half a single serve packet of crystal light lemonade) They are 20g of protein per scoop with 17 scoops per container at about $20 a container. If you drink 3 shakes a day it is about $80 a month.

I hope this helps they are tasty, I tired some that made me gag and I'm so thankful that I found this.

Plus they are delicious!! I blend with ice and a cup of water for 1.5 scoops and it is a like a frap from S*bux!! xxx

  7. I have used UNJURY for nearly 4 years and I love them. Yes I still have one shake a day usually at breakfast, since I am not a huge breakfast eater at 5am when I am already at work.

They are very very palatable. Also, Ronnie is correct, anything over 25g per sitting is wasted and just has to be excreted by the kidneys. I hope this helps you!

Protein shakes are so very important. You must must must get in all of your protein otherwise you will start to burn your muscle when you are losing and this is a bad thing!

I know it isn't easy to do for some, but I make it a priority in my daily regime!

  8. I don't know if you can get these in the UK or shipped to the UK, but they are THE BEST!! They taste like chocolate milk and were suggested to me from another blogger/bander. They are called Premier Protein. Here is the link to their website. http://www.premiernutrition.com/protein-shake.html
I am very picky and had a hard time getting them in during the day until I found these and I love them!!!!
